Which Direction to Go?

As a work at home professional, I’m in a quandry that I’m sure many work at home professionals have faced before.

I have clients requesting a service, but I don’t know if I want to provide it or not.

The service they are requesting is accounting/bookkeeping support for a certain niche (I’m not ready to reveal that niche just yet).  It’s a niche that I am definitely qualified for and interested in, but I’m much more interested in providing tax planning to this niche than accounting support.

Here are some pros and cons of providing this service…

Pros:

  1. My clients are asking for it, so I know it’s in demand and that I can ask for a competitive price for my services.
  2. I have the experience, knowledge and expertise to provide this service.
  3. It would be a great back-end product for a new ebook I’m working on (or vice versa).
  4. It would provide a regular stream of income (which is always good!).
  5. This niche has not been tackled by accountants (that I know of) so there is a lot of potential to become the expert and dominate this niche.

Cons:

  1. I don’t enjoy accounting/bookkeeping as much as I do financial and tax planning.
  2. I would have to invest in software that I don’t currently have, and probably upgrade my computers, so there would be some capital investment required.
  3. It would take me away from the activities that I enjoy most - financial and tax planning.
  4. I can’t charge nearly as much for accounting and bookkeeping as I can for financial planning on an hourly basis.
  5. I have been trying to find ways to reduce my workload, not increase it!

So, what direction should I go?  As I wrote out this post, I realized what the solution is.  Outsourcing!  I can create info products that would meet the most basic/frequently asked questions of this target market, and outsource the tasks that can’t be handled in an ebook/audio/video.

Now that I’ve decided what I want to do when I grow up, are there any bookkeepers out there that would like to partner with me on this project?  If this interests you, please send me an email at kristine@beacon-advisor.com.
