What if I don’t receive my W2?
January 31, 2008
Employers are required by law to mail all employee W2’s by the end of January each year. So, January 31st has come and gone and you haven’t yet received your W2. What should you do?
First, consider whether or not you’ve allowed enough time for the mailing to reach you. Employers need only mail the document by the 31st of January, not have it in your hands by that date.

Cara Grills me on Economics 101
January 28, 2008
My friend, Cara Mirabella of The Household Helper interviewed me this week on her podcast about the current situation in the economy. It’s basically a lesson in Economics 101 so you can better understand what the media is making such a fuss about.
We talked about how the media focuses on the negative, how the election year affects our economy, what a recession is, and what economists think 2008 has in store for us.
We also talked about what we should be doing now (if anything) and what we can do to take advantage of the ‘down’ market. We also talked a little about the upcoming tax rebate check!
How to Ask for a Lower Interest Rate
January 28, 2008
You’ve heard the old saying… it can’t hurt to ask… And when
it comes to your credit card interest rate, just asking the bank to
lower your rate could save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars.
Below is a video of four people calling their credit card companies to ask for lower interest rates. Of the four, three were successful. So, it is possible to get your interest rates lowered, just by calling.
Is saving a few hundred dollars a year in interest charges worth a few minutes on the phone? Take a listen and decide for yourself…
You CAN Get Out of Debt On Your Own
January 26, 2008
There are many resources out there for those who are deep in debt. There are credit counselers and debt consolidation companies. There are lawyers offering to have your debt reduced for a fee, and in extreme cases, there is bankruptcy. With all of these choices, one might think that a person can’t get out of debt on his own.
The truth is that it IS possible to get out of debt on your own. Even those who think there is no room in their budget to pay down debt are often surprised. It takes willpower and determination, but you CAN get out of debt on your own.
So… how do you get out of debt on your own? Here are some tips:
Frugal Living Tip: Household Expenses
January 25, 2008
by Cara Mirabella of The Household Helper
Purchasing groceries is one big area where you can save loads of
money each month. The next big area where you can save extra money
deals with household expenses. Everyone has these and everyone can use
all or just a few tips to save money each month.
If you can, change out all your light bulbs (or all the light bulbs
that you can) with new energy efficient light bulbs. These light bulbs
can cut your electricity bill by ten to twenty percent each month just
by changing the light bulbs out. These bulbs are meant to use less
electricity than older light bulbs.
When possibly, don’t run the heater or air conditioner. This only
works if you can go a few days in a row without having them on at all.
This will save you money plus if you can open the windows and be
comfortable, you’ll also be getting fresh air in the house. Another tip
is to turn down the heater in winter and turn up the air conditioner in
summer.
Does the market have you feeling squeamish?
January 24, 2008
As you read the headlines and hear the news, it’s almost impossible to avoid feeling a bit squeamish in today’s volatile market. You’re probably wondering what’s in store for 2008 after such a bumpy first few weeks. Unfortunately, it’s impossible for even the most brilliant economists to accurately predict the future.
The most important thing you can do during volatile market times is to have a plan, and to NOT make rash decisions based on emotion. During volatile markets, planning is essential to minimize your stress level. That doesn’t mean that you won’t feel nervous if your investments decline, but focus and confidence will help you fight the natural human tendency when it comes to your own nest egg to sell when the market is down. Remember the old adage "Buy low, sell high"? Now is the perfect time to "buy low".

Now’s a good time to check your credit report
January 16, 2008
Now that the holidays are over, it’s a good idea to check your credit report. Unfortunately, the holidays are a peak time for credit card fraud and identity theft, and checking your credit report is sometimes the only way to catch fraud.
You can check your credit for free at www.annualcreditreport.com. This report does not include your credit score but it can be purchased for $12.
There are three credit reporting agencies, and each of them is required to give you one
free report per year. Which means you can actually get 3 free credit reports each year, by requesting 1 report from each reporting agency. I suggest that you stagger these requests out over several months, rather than requesting from all 3 reporting agencies at once.
