Do Something Everyday to Increase Your Income
June 17, 2008
If you’re self employed, you likely experience income slumps. It may be because your business is cyclical (being a tax professional, I am extremely busy the first 4 months of the year, but then things slow down drastically during the summer months), or it may be because the economy is slow, or it may be just because you haven’t done any marketing in a while.
Whatever the reason, I like to take some time to brainstorm about ways I can increase my income. And when things are really slow, I pull that list out and try to do something every day to get my income back up to where I want it to be.

Year End Tax Tips for Home Businesses
November 30, 2007
Someone recently asked me what they could do now to make tax time easier for this upcoming tax season.
The best thing you can do is to think about taxes before then year ends. Most people wait until the tax filing deadline before they ask how they can reduce their income taxes. Unfortunately, once 2007 ends, there’s very little you can do to minimize your taxes for 2007.
To start your tax planning, you should review your income, deductions and withholdings before the year ends. Which means you need to get your bookkeeping caught up! You should use a software program, such as QuickBooks, Quicken Home and Business, or spreadsheets to keep track of your income and expenses for your business.

Keeping track of business expenses paid out of personal funds
September 19, 2007
If you’re like me, you don’t always have your business checkbook or
business credit card with you when you’re buying items for the business.
So you end up using your personal checking account or personal
credit cards to buy office supplies, postage, or other business
expenses.
Unfortunately, it’s easy to forget about these
business expenses when you’re calculating your profit/loss or preparing
your tax return, which can cost you money at tax time.
To keep track of business expenses paid from personal funds, I’ve
created a simple worksheet which I attach to a 9×13 envelope.
New! Tax and Accounting Solutions for WAHMs
August 14, 2007
As a home based business owner and a CPA, I get a lot of questions about taxes. WAHMs and home based business owners want to know how to report their income, whether they need a tax ID number, how to make estimated tax payments, and many more questions.
I have been answering questions on my blog and on several WAHM forums for a while now, but as the questions keep coming, I realize that home based business owners need more help than I can provide on a blog/forum. As a result, I am now offering the following services to help other home based business owners with their financial and tax planning needs:
Do You Need a Resale Certificate?
August 5, 2007
A few days ago I blogged about how to get your Federal tax ID number. Today I want to talk about the resale certificate.
If you purchase items to sell on the internet, or if you purchase materials/supplies to make items to sell on the internet, you are not required to pay sales tax on the items you purchase that are for resale or go into the final product for resale.
When you purchase items or materials, the vendor you are buying from will want to see a "resale certificate" before they will remove the sales tax from your order.
Another 30 Day Blogging Challenge
July 24, 2007
Summer time is here, and I don’t know about you, but I get distracted easily by thoughts of a bike ride, a long walk in the park, or just sitting out on the deck reading a book. Unfortunately, my blog (and other non-essential business activities) gets less and less attention during the summer.
To help keep our blogs in shape this summer, Crystal at Happy Mommy Thougths has set up a challenge to post each day for the next 30 days. The following fellow bloggers are taking part in this 30 day blog challenge:
